1854 joins the British Navy aged 13

1859 serves in the Chinese opium wars

1860 commands his first ship

1902 appointed Second Sea Lord

1903 appointed Commander in Chief

1904 appointed First Sea Lord

1910 retires from the British Navy as a national hero and made Baron

1914 returns to First Sea Lord position by order of Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty

1915 resigns in May in protest at the handling of the Gallipoli campaign

1920 dies in London, public navy funeral at Westminster Abbey
