Fisher’s Face

I spotted the Observer’s interview with Jan Morris by Tim Adams on 1/3/20, photograph for The Observer by Antonio Olmos.

It’s fair to say that Jan’s book Fisher’s Face is remarkable account of Jacky’s life and the path he travelled from that innocent precious boy of 6 years old sent alone from Ceylon to London to find his way in the world to becoming First Sea Lord of the British Navy.

Jacky was a survivor and determined to find his place in the world. Although Jan always says she is in love with him, she is able to shine a bright light on his legendary colossal character which is both honest and truthful. We know that he was both loved and loathed and Jan acknowledges his flaws in the book. She brings Jacky’s adventures to life with an exceptional tone and taste for the Victoria/Edwardian eras. She transports you back to being with him on his journey, you feel you are in the room with him, standing by while these historical events unfold.

Fisher’s Face is a true, inspirational historical masterpiece of writing. It is a privilege to know Jan and to know that she thinks so highly of Jacky.

I really hope Jan and Jacky do get to meet in the after-life. I’m not sure what the relationship will be, but what a fantastic dinner party I’m sure they will have with dancing afterwards. Oh to be a fly on the wall!

I encourage you to read the book - I have - several times.
